American Legal Experts’ Training and English Legal and English Legal Translator Programme

The Institute of Comparative Law has struck a deal with the Toledo Law School in 2005 to offer a unique training for undergraduate students about the US American Legal System. Participants of the American Legal Experts’ Training (hereinafter: Training) can familiarize themselves with the most important branches of the US law and its international relations; they can get theoretical and practical experience, while acquiring a new way of thinking and skills of reasoning. In addition, they participate in intensive, legal terminology courses. Classes are held by American professors from several law schools (including Toledo, Baltimore, Pittsburg and Charleston), by US practitioners with more than 25 years of experience and by Hungarian professors, attorneys and legal translators. During the course of time more than 80 students did graduate in the Training.

 

The Insitute offers a supplementary 2 years long postgraduate English Legal and English Legal Translator Programme (hereinafter: Programme) as well, where students can graduate as English Legal Translators. During the course of time more than 30 students did graduate in the Programme.


STRUCTURE OF THE TRAINING AND PROGRAMME

 

szte_ajtk_12The Training lasts for four semesters. All semesters include lectures and practice oriented seminars. Upon successful completion of all classes students have to write and defend a Final Thesis in English language.

 

The Programme lasts for four semesters. The first three semesters include lectures and translation oriented seminars. Upon successful completion of all classes in the first three semesters students have to write and defend a Final Translating Thesis in the fourth semester. The thesis includes translations from both English to Hungarian and Hungarian to English. Students have to defend their thesis before an examination board.

 

Those students who have entered the Programme after the completion of the Training may apply for credit recognition up to 40% of the credits earned on the Training.

 

CONTENT OF THE TRAINING AND PROGRAMME

 

Lectures of the Training include: Introduction to Common Law; Constitutional Law I.; Civil Procedure Law; Criminal Law; Contract Law; International Business Law; Evidence Law.

 

Seminars of the Training include: Case Law Seminar; English Language Skills; Constitutional Law II.; Basics of Torts Law; Basics of Real Property Law; Litigation Skills; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Comparative Law of Sales; Arbitration Law; Basics of Copyright Law.

Seminars of the Programme include: Case Law Seminar; English Language Skills; Fundamental Rights; Law of Torts; Property Law and Contract Formulation; Trial Advocacy; Alternative Dispute Resolution Practices; Drafting Legal Documents; Trial Techniques; International Sale of Goods; Intellectual Property; Introduction to the Theory of Legal Translation; Computer-Assisted Translation; Translation of Political Documents and Statutes; Translation of Documents in Social Sciences and Administration; Business Law Communication; Translation of Business Documents and Contracts.

 

Application and Admission

 

To apply, please return the application form available on the website of the Institute of Comparative Law to the coordinator of both programs. The admission to the trainings depends upon the successful completion of an oral entrance exam. The admission is conditional on prior successful completion of two semesters at any universities.

 

The tuition fee of the Training is HUF 90.000.- per semester. The tuition fee of the Programme is HUF 120.000.- in the first three semesters and HUF 60.000.- in the fourth semester.

 

Certificate

 

Upon successful completion of the Training students will be awarded an English certificate stating the completed courses and corresponding grades. The certificate will be signed by the Head of the Institute of Comparative Law, the Dean of the Szeged Law School and the Dean of the Toledo Law School.

 

Upon successful completion of the Programme students will be awarded a Hungarian certificate and the English translation thereof stating that they have graduated as English Legal Translators.
